Cycling
A few years ago, Wester Ross looked like the ideal place to bring your bicycle, with plenty of tracks, trails, and single track roads winding their way across some beautiful and remote countryside. However, on arrival, you noticed the signs telling you that many cyclists were not allowed on tracks or were banned from going through huge areas of private estate land.
Although this still applies in some areas, it's not the case across the whole area anymore. You can now enjoy cycling in many places - but check with the local estate before you go! There's no such problem with single track roads, however, as nearly all of these are for public use.
Despite there being several quite significant hills (try cycling up the hill at Gruinard!), the area has a wealth of good cycling to offer along relatively flat coastal routes such as the one out to Rhua Reidh Lighthouse, or wooded routes such as the one to Badrallach (near Dundonnell)
All you need is a packed lunch, a map...and good weather!
Here's some suggestions for you..............
Gairloch to Rhu Reidh - approx. 12 miles, much of it single track, up some hills and down others but actually relatively flat for most of the way. Fantastic coastal views most of the way out towards Skye, Harris and Lewis.
