Iron & Wood by Victoria Clare Bernie
Gairloch Museum
August 3rd - September 1st 2019

Iron & Wood is an art installation, a room of drawings and films preoccupied with the nature, industry and strange stories that people the local landscape. Victoria Clare Bernie has created a gentleman’s cabinet, a fictional study of sorts, for Sir George Hay the ironmaster and adventurer who lived and worked at Letterewe on the eastern shores of Loch Maree in the early years of the 17thcentury.
Victoria Clare Bernie’s subject is the Scottish landscape. She makes video installations, drawings, animations, constructs and photographs that seek out the strange details of geography and ecology, history and myth. Her work is graphic and immersive. Video films map the surfaces of plants and flowers, rocks and stones, drawings dwell on the autobiographical surface of trees, sculptures bear witness to a fascination with collection and collation.
Victoria has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of awards from Creative Scotland, The Leverhulme Trust, the Film and Video Umbrella and the Hope Scott Trust. In 2008-9 she was the Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence at SAMS Marine Laboratory in Dunstaffnage, Argyll. In 2019 Victoria was awarded a Royal Scottish Academy Residency for Scotland 2019-20.

Iron & Wood was created with support from a Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council Visual Artist and Craft Maker Award and a Hope Scott Trust Award.
